Top Tips for Adopting a New Pet

If you’re considering adopting a new pet at some point in the future, it’s essential to make sure you’re prepared.

Here at Rosewood, we know rescue pets can transform a house into a home while also offering them a safe and secure future - and that’s another reason our work with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home is so important to us.

Whether you’re adopting a new fur-family member from Battersea or you’re planning to visit your local rescue centre, here we share our top tips for welcoming an adopted furry or feathered friend into your home.

Finding the right fit

Family life is extremely busy at the best of times. Before welcoming a new pet into the mix, make sure you take a moment to consider how much time, money and space you have to give your new companion.

All pets have different needs and spatial requirements - from small and independent felines to a demanding and fast-growing puppy - so choosing the right pet to fit your lifestyle is the first step towards a happy home.

Always do your research on different breeds and their needs. You’ll find plenty of advice on Battersea’s website or your nearest rescue centre will be able to give you helpful advice on how best to handle certain pets.

A costly companion

Owning a pet can be more costly than people expect; from surprise vet bills and pet insurance, to specialist food, toys, and accessories. Expenses can quickly add up.

Of course, adopting your new friend rather than buying one will save the large upfront cost. Not to mention, it’s a highly rewarding experience to rescue an animal in need of a forever home.

Whilst pets are certainly an investment, you’ll find the lifetime reward your furry friend will bring you is worth every penny.

Introductions to the family

When bringing an adopted pet into your home, it’s important to consider how they’ll fit into your current household - especially if you already have other animals. Introducing them to existing pets should be done slowly and carefully.

When making the first introductions, keep a close eye on their behaviour and that of any existing pets and look out for signs of stress or aggression. You may find your first pet becomes territorial, in which case they’ll need some extra care and support from you.

To help create a positive environment, keep some treats on hand to reinforce calm, friendly behaviour. The Naturefood Duck Coins, Chicken Magic Bone or Freeze Dried Cat Treats are the perfect pocket treat for this.

You’ll also want to introduce your rescue pet to friends, neighbours, and extended family but it’s best to give them a few quiet days to settle in. Getting them socialised is super important, but too much too soon can be overwhelming.

Make sure everyone understands how to approach and handle your new pet gently, especially children, as grabby hands can be intimidating for a pet adjusting to a new environment.

Adults vs Little Ones

Whether you’re welcoming a young rescue or older companion, preparing for the unexpected is key. Rescue pets often come with unique histories, and it may take time for them to feel safe in a new environment.

In the beginning, some younger dogs may be too nervous to venture into the garden, especially if they’ve spent time in shelters or unfamiliar spaces. Our Rosewood Puppy Pads can be a big help during this transition, offering a practical solution whilst your new pup gains confidence and settles into their new routine.

For rescue cats, creating a sense of comfort from day one is essential. Many will seek out a quiet, secure spot to retreat to. Providing them with a cosy bed - like our Boucle Fold-Away Cat Den - can give your new feline friend a safe and familiar spot to relax in as they adjust to their surroundings.

Next steps

Bringing home a rescue pet can feel overwhelming but will be incredibly rewarding. Planning ahead and setting up your environment in a considered way will reduce stress for both you and your new family member, helping them to settle comfortably into their new home.
